Rootstock renovation and rejuvenation of balding vines using ‘phyto-surgery’
Removal of the bare head with a carving saw and ball milling cutter
- Removal of the infectious surface of the bare head
- Removal of infected dead wood, including white tinder (ESCA)
- Healing of the chronic wound in the transition zone between infected material and healthy tissue through superficial drying and relief of the vine from the constant immunological stress of the large-scale defence reaction against the invasive dead wood fungi
- After healing, the vines have a virtually unlimited lifespan
- Time required: 10 to 15 minutes per vine

Wherever ESCA/dead wood is found, clear it away.
‘The special quality and justification of ‘physiological pruning’ and ‘phytosurgery’ are also reflected in the new aesthetics of the treated canes, whose healthy, meandering growth makes them recognisable as liana plants again.’
