DEFOLIATION MEASURES

  • Exposing the grape zone at the grain stage by removing basal leaves
  • while preserving, or at most partially removing, the third and fourth leaves opposite the grapes, which are important for their optimal primary supply
  • Better ventilation with reduced infection risk due to faster drying
  • Increased light exposure with radiation-induced thickening of the quality-determining grape skins.
  • Increase in colour index and extract value.
  • Prevention of poor shoot formation.

Grapes before and after halving
  • Strict yield regulation (berry stage grape closure) by removing the lower 1/2 to 2/3 of the grape
  • High extract enrichment and aroma density in the remaining portion
  • In addition, protection against infection through loose berries with better ventilation and faster drying
Half of the grapes are discarded.
  • The grape mass of up to 2 tonnes resulting from this reduction measure is dropped into the area under the vines.
  • This returns it to the nutrient cycle of the vine, rather than the vineyard aisle.
Loops

Loops instead of topping

- No conventional mechanical topping/cutting of up to 10 shoot tips, which are instead looped back into the wire frame by hand
- No phytoschock
- Naturally regulated, stress-free, calm and self-limiting shoot growth
- No substrate competition between untimely new shoots (suckers) and grapes
- Consequently, increased concentrations of yeast-usable nitrogen and minerals in the berries
- Early veraison as physiological, seasonally typical and natural ripening and ageing of the vines
